"Strawberry Roan"
Let me tell you a tale and a good one I own of an old caballo a strawberry roan
I was hangin' round town just a spendin' my time out of a job and not earnin' a dime
When a stranger steps up and he says
I suppose you're a bronc rider by the looks of your clothes
I says guess your right there's none I can't tame
If its ridin' wild ponies that my middle name
Oh that strawberry roan oh that strawberry roan
He says he's a cayuse that's never been rode
The guy that gets on him is bound to get throwed
Throwed of that strawberry roan
Out in the horse corral standin' alone is an old caballo, a strawberry roan
Spavined old legs and small pigeon toes pair of pig eyes and a long Roman nose
Little pin ears and they're split at the tip a big fourty four brand was on his left hip
So I puts on my spurs and I coils up my twine
Says to that stranger that ten spot is mine
Oh that strawberry roan oh that strawberry roan
I'll break him to saddle or break him my own
I'll ride him until he lies down with a grown
Bring on your strawberry roan
Then I puts on my blinds and it sure is a fight
Next comes the saddle I screws her down tight
Steps up aboard him and rises the blind get out the way boys he's gonna unwind
Shore is a broad walker he heaves a big sigh
He only lacks wings for to be on the fly
He's the worse buckin' bronco I've seen on the range
Turn on a nickle and give you some change
Oh that strawberry roan oh that strawberry roan
That sunfishin' critter's worth leavin' alone
There's nary a buster from Texas to Nome
Can ride that strawberry roan

"Re-Ride"
Since I saw that rodeo in 1965
I had to try to be the greatest bareback rider alive
I went and did some practicing on pa's old ropin' mare
And I thought I'd take that bronc I'd drawed
And really part it's hair
When they opened up the gate he did a double flip
Half way through the second one is when I lost my grip
I hooked my spurs into the dees and hung with all my might
I held my breath he chinned the moon
And sucked back to the right
My boots came off and went asailin' right up in the stands
My belt it broke and shattered my watch I lost my wedding band
I scattered all my cigarettes my shirt ripped down the back.
I sure was gettin' dizzy and I thought my neck would crack
I rode him several jumps with both hands high up in the air
He jumped into an old light pole we parted company there
I landed in some muddy slop he stomped right through my side,
I knew he busted all my ribs and made me wanna die
Nothin' ever busted me like that old pony ride
I couldn't seem to catch my breath I couldn't seem to hide
I hobbled back barefooted just a searchin' for my pride
And I just couldn't believe my achin' ears
When the announcer said RE-RIDE RE-RIDE RE-RIDE
I've had enough for 20 men and he calls up RE-RIDE
RE-RIDE RE-RIDE
You'd think he got me good enough they give him one more try

"Someday Soon"
There's a young man that I know just turned twenty-one
Comes from down in southern Colorado
Just out of the service, he's lookin' for his fun
Someday soon, goin' with him someday soon
Her parents cannot stand him 'cause he rides the rodeo
They say he's not her kind, he'll leave her cryin'
If he asks she'll follow him down the toughest road to Hoe
Someday soon, goin' with him someday soon
Oh, when he visits her, her pa ain't got one good thing to say
Gotta hunch he was just as wild in his younger days
Oh blow you old Blue Northern, blow him back to her
He's likely drivin' back from California
He loves his damned old rodeo as much as he loves her
Someday soon, goin' with him someday soon
Oh blow you old Blue Northern, blow him back to her

"National Finals Rodeo"
A rodeo's just a rodeo after riding several years
From ol' Cheyenne to Houston they never cause too much fear
But let me tell you about one that will chill your very soul
It happens in December when it's snowin' and it's cold
In Oklahoma City there's a building of concrete
It's where the toughest stock and men will gather and compete
The points have all been tallied and the stock has all been brought
We've got just two more hours cause it starts at eight o'clock
It's the Finals the NFR the Series of the sport
Hey rookie can you take ten head have you got the heart
You think you're a tough cowboy we'll find out in the end
When that final whistle blows and the stock's all in the pen
The coliseum's quiet except for the sounds
Of cowboys getting ready and the workmen of the grounds
The cowboys ask each other, what each other's got
"Did you draw ol' Necklace or pluck old Double-Ought
The tension now is mounting as the crowd starts pouring in
A shiver goes all through me like from a cold cold wind
I hear the horses comin' runnin' down the alleyway
They're snortin' and a blowin' as men shut the sliding gates
It's the Finals the NFR...
We had too much time a while ago but not enough time now
The Anthem is now over the grand entry's going out
I sit there on my bronc I'm ready and I wait
I hear a chute gate open so I look out through the gate
A horse comes boiling out and blows up at the roof
And then there comes another kicking like a curly wolf
I hear the chute boss holler through the yelling of the crowd
He says there's one ahead of you so you'd better get screwed down
It's the Finals the NFR...
I nod my head, I'm in a daze the horse goes boiling out
I run my spurrs into his neck and then I drag 'em out
My mind is in a blur my eyes are seeing red
The flank catch slams into my back, his rump bangs on my head
From somewhere in the background I can hear a buzzer sound
My hand's jerked from the riggin and I crash into the ground
I stumble to my feet as I stagger to the wall
I wonder to myself is it really worth it all

"The Buckskin Lady"
Now, I've got a pony, the fastest thing around,
And of all the girls I've known she's the truest one I've found.
Well, she'll cut 'em and she'll head 'em just the way you want 'em
Turned,
And if you drop your loop around 'em, she can make a grass rope hum,
And any time you got a rodeo, and I've got the entry fee,
You can bet your boots my gal and I will come.
Whoopee-ti-d-idi-ido on the plains of colorado
That young pony was born to work the trail.
Some old idaho rawhider was the first one tried to ride her,
Bronco buster, wild horse rustler, well she flipped him off like a
Turkey feather duster.
Now, some folks like a cadillac with power brakes and air,
Just give me a hamlee saddle and my little buckskin mare.
Well, I rode her up a mountain when we made that summer drive,
And I [g]took her to wyomin? for a rodeo or two,
At old cheyenne and saratoga, we roped them little dogies,
She the best ole gal this cowboy ever knew.
When she gets to old to rodeo too old to ride the range,
I'll take the buckskin lady out across the open plains.
Cause she's just an ole cow pony and I know she'd go plum crazy
If she had to stand unsaddled around the barn the whole day through
I'll just turn her loose to ramble underneath them rocky mountains
And tell 'em that her workin? days are through.

"Oklahoma Joe"
He prayed upon the bad ones so wide was spread his fame
From Houston up to Calgary the folks all knew his name
He was the toughest cowboy ever worked the rodeo
This man that they call Oklahoma Joe
His wins were tremendous and the crowds would gather round
The whisky flowed like water when his party came to town
It was the ramblin' life that he loved so
This man that they call Oklahoma Joe
The sands of time were winnin' mighty Joe would not give in
Heavy was the toll he'd pay to lead his life of sin
At the big one down in Cheyenne he got throwed
This man that they call Oklahoma Joe
A silence fell upon the crowd as Joe rose to his feet
At last there lived an outlaw might Joe could not defeat
And gone was all the glory he loved so
This man that they call Oklahoma Joe
On the sidewalks of Milwaukee where the winter wind is cold
His noble spirit broken and his body weak and old
In the mornin' light they found him lyin' dead upon the snow
This man that they call Oklahoma Joe
Take warnin' young cowboy turn back for its too late
Your sin will be recorded in that talley book of fate
You'll die and let the devil take your soul
Like this man that they call Oklahoma Joe

"Daydream Cowboy"
I'm sittin' in a city filled with people cars and smoke
The walls are closin' in on me my heart's about to choke
The world becomes a foggy dream and I no longer see
The dirty concrete canyons where I have come to be
Cause a cowboy rides the mountains and the draws inside my mind
With his Buckskin underneath him and his pockets full of time
And I can hear his spurs a jinglin' the chimes of his slappin' tack
As his horse lopes up a ridge with the moon light on his back
He rides into a bearin' country not meant for him alone
For a lovin' dark haired lady waits for her cowboy to come home
Well his hat was made in Texas and his chaps are bat wing style
His saddles made by Hauser he rides it all the while
It glistens with silver conches tap adores for his feet
He's got a chew of Copenhagen tucked inside his cheek
In fact the only thing that saves me here from goin' plumb insane
Is that cowboy poundin' leather down in the coolies in my brain
And I can hear his spurs a jinglin'...

"Rodeo You've Cast A Spell"
White lines go flash-in by me as I wonder where this road will finally end
I think about the past and I'm not too sure just where the road began
I see the farmers plowing and I see the cattle feeding on the hill
And I ponder on the question will I quit the road I guess I never will
Rodeo I'm tied to you your call has won my heart my mind and soul
You're a woman and you've cast a spell upon this man you've got me rodeo
My wife sits home alone and she's wishin' that this year would finally end
With each empty day and lonely night she hopes I make it safely home again
And I'd like to take her with me but my money and my luck's been mighty low
And net month she can go if I can win the next big rodeo
Rodeo I'm tied to you...

"True Western Movie"
"True Western Movie"
She saw him for the first time in that open all night diner
When she served him up some chili and a beer
And the feeling that she got when he grinned across the counter
Was across between excitement and the fear
He looked as hard and dry as the back roads that he traveled
Chasin' rodeos through half a hundred towns
He said hang up your apron honey and brush down your hair
And well go ya hooin around
He's a true western movie without any star ge's something like she's never known
But she's seen enough movies to know how they'll end
He'll ride into the sunset alone
He makes her feel like a kid cuttin' school
But by now she should be old enough to know
That today ain't forever and there's only so long
You can't take all your pleasures to go
But as long as it lasts she'll just keep hangin' on cause she's just along for the ride
And Lord if they fly to high and even if she falls all she can hurt is her pride
He's a true western movie...

"Joade The Rodeo Clown"
Gather round boys and a tale I will tell about Joade the rodeo clown
This happy feller keep the cowboys together after they hit the ground
He once was a fighter and a saddle bronc rider and all around hell of a hand
But a bull got him down away from the clown he lived but not ride again
But rodeo was burned deep in his soul and his heart just wouldn't let go
He didn't want cowboys hooked by the bulls so he took to clowin' the show
With grease paint and red nose and baggy old clothes
His track shoes barreled and bloomed
He earned his keep a fightin' the bulls and savin' us hard ridin' fools
I was down in the well and hung in my rope in a show in old west Texas town
The man who saved me from chain and hells was Joade the rodeo clown
The bull gored old Joade with his terrible old horns
Then stomped and mauled him around
One of my buddies dragged me away but Joade lay dead on the ground
The preacher they found for the funeral well he didn't have a whole lot to say
He didn't know Joade or about rodeo life so all he could do was to pray
There's many a cowboy that owes him his life and the children all loved him too
There were lines on his face and each one was a trace
Of the laughter the miles and the blues
So barkeep get with it and set em up again I'm buyin' this next round
And if there's any man here who can't drink to old Joade
Then he better just get the hell out
Gather round boys and a tale I will tell about Joade the rodeo clown

He once was a fighter and a saddle bronc rider and all around hell of a hand

And if there's any man here who can't drink to old Joade

"Mighty Lucky Man"
Well, I figure myself a mighty luck man with the simple few things I've got
There's money in the pockets of these old wore out jeans
I've got a trailer house and a lot
My wife's good lookin' and a heck of a cook and she does her best to satisfy
I've got a little bitty boy he's my pride and joy
And a happiness that money can't buy
Well I owe everything that I've got the the Lord he's delt me a mighty good hand
And I owe a lotta people in a lot of different ways for making me what I am
But the one thing that I'm most thankful for I guess it was a stroke of good luck
Is when the Lord looked down on this great big world and made those horses that buck
Well, I wonder what my life would be like today if not for them buckin' old broncs
I guess I'd be tied to desk and a phone or workin' at some old gas pumps
Well I know that I can't ride forever but I'll do it just as long as I can
Cause it's live for today forget about tomorrow life of a rodeo man
Well I owe everything...
When the Lord looked down on this great big world
And made those horses that buck

"Easy Come, Easy Go"
This old highway, she's hotter than nine kinds of hell
And the rides, they're as scarce as the rain
When you're down to your last shuck with nothin' to sell
And you're too far away from the train
It's been a good month of Sundays and a guitar a go
I had a tall drink of yesterday's wine
Left a long string of friends some sheets in the wind
And some satisfied women behind
Hey, won't you ride me down easy?
Lord, ride me on down
Leave word in the dust where I lay
Say I'm easy come, easy go
And I'm easy to love when I stay, when I stay
There's snow on the mountain, raised hell on the hill
I locked horns with the devil himself
I've been a rodeo bum, a son of a gun
And a hobo with stars in his crown
Hey, won't you ride me down easy?
Lord, ride me on down
Leave word in the dust to where I lay
Say I'm easy come, easy go
And I'm easy to love when I stay
Hey, won't you ride me down easy?

"The Only Road You Know"
The rodeo is over and the crowd has all gone home
And you have time to walk around these lonely grounds alone
You see the empty buckin chutes where broncs and bulls have stood
You think about the way they fired the bad ones and the good
You ask yourself what calls me on why did I ever go
And leave my loved ones far behind to follow rodeo
Though you haven't got a dime you know just where to go
You'll pack your hat and riggin' sack to another rodeo
Some folks say that you're a bum but you know that isn't so
You are just a happy guy on the only road you know
You bucked down at Mount Isa when you got hot from the swell
And you missed one out at Alice Springs but they said you spurred him well
Feeling bruised and battered and your sprits mighty low
You hear the highway call you on to another rodeo
Though you haven't got a dime...

"She's In Love With A Rodeo Man"
She's a barmate in a west Texas dancehall she's there every night till they close
And the cowboys pay for the jukebox and she plays San Antonio Rose
Well I know her life ain't been easy Lord the lines in her face say it all
But she still is a beautiful woman in the lights of the dance Texas hall
But she won't sit down at your table and I know that you can't hold her hand
She won't go home with you cowboy she's in love with a rodeo man
Well he's hard and he's scarred and he's grayin' and he's stoned most all of the time And he drinks at a dark corner table and he waits there until closin' time
He's hard and his scars are grey and he's stone most all of the time
And he drinks at the dark cornered table and he he drinks there until closing time
But she won't sit down at your table...

"Real Live Buckeroo"
Well I ain't the type of cowboy that you'll see on TV
I wasn't near as pretty as Mama wanted me to be
Well I grew up on the ranches just cussin' all day long
Breakin' in them broomtails and hummin' old dirty songs
Whiskey tends to make me high and sad songs make me cry
And pretty women break my heart almost every night
Well I run on beans and nicotine I'm a real live buckeroo
And my heart's not pure and my boots ain't clean and I never tell the truth
Well if there's anything under my hat besides the cattle biz
Well I just can't seem to remember what it is
Yeah my thinkin's kinda crude but my lovin' gets plumb rank
Them girlies just don't understand me a snortin' round their flanks
And when I take a nasty fall I'll cuss until I'm blue
Then I'll get right up and on again just like you're s'posed to do
But it ain't because I'm so brave all that stuff's just talk
My daddy says the reason is I'm dumber than a box of rocks yeah
Whiskey tends to make me high...
This song ain't bout no Strawberry Roan or no ram page herd of steers
This is just the type of cowboy song that you probably don't like to hear
This song ain't got no message and won't feel perty in yer ear
This song is just one of them there
Well this song is just one of them there these here yeah

"If You Loved Me You'd Do It"
The walls that surround me in this room I call my well of loneliness
Keep whispering your name with the voices hauntin' as your soft arrays
And since you've gone away I get lonelier each day
And I still don't know how you can put me through it
If there's any love still burning in your heart you'd be returnin'
If you loved me you'd do it
If you love me you'd do it you'd come back home to me
You'd take away this loneliness and end my misery
If you love me yes if you'd love me you'd do it
The memories that I live with seem to press against me softly in the night
Remembering the good times don't leave time to think of who was wrong or right
Love is not an easy prize it can pay before your eyes
It's not a simple thing and we both knew it
And to throw it all away is wrong so come back home if you'd love me you'd do it
If you love me you'd do it...

"Rodeo Cowboy"
I meet her in Wyoming at the Cheyenne rodeo
Just a girl in blue jeans and eighteen at the time
I remember how she cheered the day I rode a horse called Midnight
And I hoped that someday that cowgirl could be mine
She followed me to Denver where we became good friends
We'd sit around the cutes and talk while I was killin' time
I'd laugh and tell her stories but I'd never mention stayin'
For the next town and the rodeo were always on my mind
I'm a rodeo cowboy I follow the circuit
Where top money's paid that's where I'll be found
The only thing I own is a suitcase and a saddle
Rodeo cowboy I'll never settle down
In Salt Lake City Utah I told her that I loved her
But still she knew I wasn't born to be the settlin' kind
For with tomorrow's sun I'd pack up my ol gear bag
And leave all thoughts of her and all the hundred miles behind
The last time I saw her was in Amarillo Texas
I'm still in love with her although she can't be mine
But I hope she'll keep the shinny silver buckle that I gave her
Says All Around Cowboy of 1969

"Rusty Spurs"
Rusty spurs a hangin' from a nail their on the wall
Cold winds a blowin' and the snow begins to fall
Old man a dreamin' in his rockin' chair
Thinkin' bout the days gone by wishin' he was there
Rodeo you take a boy and make a man so tall
Drink his youth and cast him by the way
What's he gonna do now that he's through
But sit and dream about the good old days
He used to rodeo and ride 'em mighty fine
Now he's old and crippled but he rides on in his mind
And I can tell, rodeo, you're doin' the same to me
I feel like I'm fifty but I'm only twenty-three
Rodeo you take a boy...
Old picture album he keeps there by his side
Holds cherised mem'ries of broncs he used to ride
He thinks about his old friends and where they are today
Are they still living or have they passed away
Rodeo you take a boy...

"Amarillo By Morning"
Amarillo by morning up from San Antone
Everything that I got is just what I've got on
Oh when the sun is high in the Texas sky I'll be buckin' in the country fair
Amarillo my morning Amarillo I'll be there
Turned my saddle in Houston broke my leg in Santa Fe
I lost my wife and a girl friend somewhere along the way
But I'll be looking for aid when they pull that gate and I hope the judge ain't blind
Amarillo by morning Amarillo on my mind
Amarillo by morning up from San Antone
Everything that I got is just what I've got on
I ain't got a dime and what I got is mine I ain't rich but Lord I'm free
Amarillo by morning Amarillo's where I'll be
Amarillo by morning Amarillo's where I'll be
Amarillo by morning up from San Antone

"Time"
The cool fall breeze is blowin' and the leaves are turnin' gold
And the smell of wood smoke takes me back to days of long ago
I think about my childhood pumpkin pie and Halloween
And the magic in a young boy's hopes and dreams.
Time time goes on endlessly just like a river runnin' surely to the sea
Time time you've left your mark on me but time we've had a good time haven't we
But the years went by too quickly and the leaves fall from the trees
And the winds a little colder now than what it used to be
And I feel kind of saddened that the summer now is gone
And a little scared of what now lies beyond
Time time goes on endlessly...
I pull in off the highway to another rodeo
To another crowd of people think it's just a wild west show
I'll ride my bronc and drive away and head on down the road
It's a hell of a way to make a buck but it's the only life I've known
Time time goes on endlessly...
The cool fall breeze is blowin' and the leaves are turnin' gold
